Environmental Activism | Protecting Marine Biodiversity
For the past two years, visual artist and environmental activist Beatriz Padilla has dedicated her efforts to raising awareness about the threats facing the Gulf of California, one of the most biodiverse marine ecosystems on Earth.
Through her initiative, Voices of the Ocean, she has actively opposed the Saguaro Energy Project, a proposed liquefied natural gas export development in Sonora, Mexico.
The project would involve transporting natural gas through the Gulf of California aboard large LNG carriers, raising serious environmental concerns about underwater noise, vessel collisions with whales, marine habitat disruption, and the preservation of this extraordinary ecosystem.
Combining art, science, and environmental advocacy, Beatriz has made the protection of whales and their habitat a central mission of her work.

21-Day Hunger Strike | Art as Environmental Protest
During whale season in Loreto, Beatriz Padilla undertook an extraordinary artistic and environmental protest: a 21-day hunger strike against the Saguaro Energy Project.
Living in a camp surrounded by nature, she devoted those 21 days to painting the songs and voices of whales, transforming their underwater vocalizations into a powerful visual expression.
Her protest sought to draw attention to the potential consequences of industrial maritime traffic on the whales that inhabit the Gulf of California.
Through this peaceful demonstration, Beatriz combined personal sacrifice, artistic creation, and environmental awareness, giving a voice to the extraordinary marine life that cannot speak for itself.
Mexico and International Environmental Initiatives
Environmental Advocacy | Scientific Collaboration | Conservation
Following her 21-day hunger strike, Beatriz Padilla continued her environmental activism through meetings with scientists, conservation experts, environmental organizations, and local communities.
Traveling throughout Mexico and internationally, she sought to amplify the voices of those working to protect the Gulf of California and its extraordinary marine biodiversity.
Her efforts have included participation in initiatives such as the First National Day of the Gulf of California and support for the AQUÍ ¡NO! movement of the Yoreme people, opposing the completion and operation of a large ammonia plant on the shores of Ohuira Bay, Sinaloa.
Through collaboration, public awareness campaigns, and artistic expression, Voices of the Ocean continues to bring attention to environmental threats and the urgent need to protect marine ecosystems.

Artistic Expedition | Whale Conservation | Environmental Awareness
The following year, Beatriz returned to the waters of Loreto, where blue whales gather during their seasonal migration, continuing her commitment to the protection of these magnificent marine mammals.
She established a solitary camp surrounded by wilderness, spending two weeks immersed in nature while creating another painting inspired by the voices and presence of whales.
During this expedition, she continued connecting with local experts, researchers, and members of the community, strengthening the dialogue about marine conservation and the environmental challenges facing the region.
Her ongoing journey demonstrates how art can become a powerful instrument for environmental activism, inspiring awareness and collective action.
